Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 13, 2026
Dreams are about as personal as data gets. This policy explains, in plain language, what Nightjar collects, why, who touches it, and how to take it back. The short version: your dreams are yours — we don't sell data, we don't train AI models on your journal, and you can export or permanently delete everything, instantly, at any time.
What we collect
- Your account: email address, display name if you set one, timezone, and your preferences (default tradition, reminder time and channel).
- Your journal: the dreams you write, voice recordings you make, their transcripts, and the metadata you add (mood, lucidity, sleep quality). From these we derive titles, symbols, recurring patterns, and interpretations.
- Billing: if you subscribe, payment is handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number — only your subscription status and a Stripe customer reference.
- Usage: basic product analytics (which features are used, not the content of your dreams) and error reports, to keep Nightjar working.
How AI is involved
When you save a dream, its text is sent to Anthropic (Claude) to extract a title, mood, and symbols, and — when you ask for a reading — to write an interpretation. Voice recordings are sent to OpenAI (Whisper) for transcription. These providers process your content to provide the feature and, under our agreements with them, do not use it to train their models. Interpretations are reflections, not advice — see the disclaimer at the bottom of every page.
Who else touches your data
Nightjar runs on a small set of service providers, each doing one job: Supabase (database, sign-in, and voice-recording storage), Vercel (hosting), Stripe (payments), Anthropic and OpenAI (the AI features above), Upstash (rate limiting), Resend (email, if reminders or digests are on), Cloudflare Turnstile (bot protection on public pages), and PostHog and Sentry (analytics and error reporting). We share with them only what each needs, and nothing is ever sold or shared for advertising.
How long we keep things
Your journal stays as long as your account does. Delete a single dream and it's gone immediately, along with its recording and readings. Delete your account (Settings → Delete account) and everything — dreams, audio, interpretations, patterns, your profile, and your sign-in — is hard-deleted right away, not in 30 days. Backups age out on a rolling basis within 30 days after that.
Your rights
- Export: Settings → Export everything gives you an instant zip of your full journal as JSON and Markdown.
- Delete: any dream, or the whole account, at any time, no email required, no retention period.
- Correct: every dream and preference is editable in the app.
- If you're in the EU/UK or a jurisdiction with similar rights (access, portability, erasure, objection), the tools above cover them — and you can always email us for anything they don't.
What we don't do
- No selling or renting data, to anyone, ever.
- No advertising networks, no third-party tracking pixels.
- No training AI models on your journal.
- No reading your dreams. Humans at Nightjar access journal content only if you explicitly ask us to (e.g., a support request), or where the law requires it.
Children
Nightjar isn't for children under 16. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes & contact
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect. Questions, requests, or anything this page didn't answer: hello@nightjarapp.com.
